New Chief of IOM Bangladesh presents credentials to the Honorable Foreign Minister

Dhaka- The new Chief of IOM- UN Migration Agency’s mission in Bangladesh, Giorgi Gigauri has presented his credentials to the Honorable Foreign Minister H.E. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP.

“I sincerely welcome Mr. Gigauri to Bangladesh as the Chief of Mission and look forward to continuing the strong partnership between the Government and IOM,” said the Honourable Foreign Minister H.E. Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, MP.

Mr. Gigauri takes charge of IOM Bangladesh in a time when the country is witnessing the effects of different drivers of migration causing distinctive dilemmas; from creating greater skilled migration opportunities to hosting approximately a million Rohingya who fled violence in Myanmar.

“The overall migration situation in Bangladesh is extremely dynamic and brings a lot challenges in its path,” underscored the new IOM Bangladesh Chief, “I look forward to working closely with the Government to ensure that the rights of migrants are best protected and they are benefitted the most through a well governed migration management system.”

IOM’s Chief of mission assured that the organization would continue to address the Rohingya crisis with top most priority and maximize its efforts in supporting the host communities in Cox’s Bazar affected by the heavy influx. He said, “The worst consequence of the crisis would be having destabilized host communities struggling to cope with daily means of life. It is essential for us to continue the coordinated approach and bring together synergies of all present humanitarian actors on ground.”

IOM is hosting the Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) where the organization jointly with UNHCR and other agencies is ensuring the interventions to address the Rohingya crisis are effective and undertaken in a coordinated manner.

A Georgian citizen, Mr. Gigauri has formerly served as IOM’s Chief of Mission in Papua New Guinea and Deputy Chief of Mission in Indonesia.
